IELTS Requirements for Nurses in the USA
The USA does not have one single IELTS score requirement for all internationally educated nurses. Nursing licences are issued by individual state boards, so the English language requirements can differ between states. The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) also has its own English proficiency requirements for nurses applying through its Certification Program.
For the CGFNS Certification Program, registered nurses can meet the English proficiency requirement with an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 overall, with a minimum score of 7 in Speaking. CGFNS also accepts other English language tests, including OET and PTE Academic. State boards may have similar requirements. For example, both the Texas Board of Nursing and the Florida Board of Nursing require an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 overall with 7.0 in Speaking for applicants who need to demonstrate English language proficiency. Florida may apply this requirement to internationally educated nurses whose nursing education was not taught entirely in English or who do not have English as their native language.
This means nurses should always check the requirements of the specific state where they plan to apply. A score accepted by one state or organisation may not automatically meet the requirements of another.

IELTS Requirements for Nurses in Australia
Australia has a more standardised English language requirement for nurses. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia requires internationally qualified nurses to meet its English language skills registration standard.
For IELTS Academic, nurses generally need a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) also allows certain applicants to combine results from two IELTS test sittings. To use this option, the applicant must achieve a minimum overall score of 7 in each sitting and achieve a minimum score of 7 in each component across the two sittings. No individual component score can fall below 6.5. The two test sittings must take place within a six month period.
Australia also recognises other English language tests for nursing registration. For example, the current standard lists PTE Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills.
Since English proficiency forms part of the registration process, nurses should check the latest NMBA requirements before booking their test.
IELTS Requirements for Nurses in New Zealand
New Zealand also has specific English language requirements for internationally qualified nurses. The Nursing Council of New Zealand accepts IELTS Academic as one of the approved English language tests.
For IELTS Academic, nurses need a minimum score of 7 in Reading, Listening and Speaking, along with 6.5 in Writing.
New Zealand allows nurses to achieve the required scores over more than one IELTS sitting. However, applicants must meet all the required scores within 12 months of their first test and complete all sittings within the three years before their application to the Nursing Council.
The Nursing Council also provides other pathways for demonstrating English language competence. Some nurses may qualify through their nursing education or registration history, depending on where they completed their education and other eligibility conditions.
