Before you book the Pearson Test of English Academic, it’s essential to understand the eligibility requirements. Many test takers assume there are strict rules about age, education or nationality, and some delay their booking because they are unsure. In reality, the entry rules are short and clear. This guide explains the PTE eligibility criteria, including age, qualifications, identification and booking conditions. It also separates two ideas that are often confused: being eligible to take the test and achieving the score required by a university or visa.
Who Can Take the PTE Academic Test?
PTE Academic is open to anyone who needs to demonstrate their English proficiency for study, migration, or professional registration. Pearson does not require a particular nationality, first language or profession. Test centres operate in many countries, so most candidates can find a convenient location. Eligibility depends on three things: your age, your identification documents and whether the details you enter when booking, such as your name, match those documents.
PTE Age Requirement: Minimum and Maximum Age
You must be at least 16 years old to take PTE Academic. If you are under 18, you also need consent from a parent or guardian, and you provide it while you book. For example, a 17-year-old school leaver who plans to study in Australia can sit the test, but a parent or guardian must complete the consent steps shown during booking. Pearson notes that this step can delay a booking, so start it early
There is no maximum age limit, so adults of any age can take the test.
Education Qualifications For Taking PTE Academic
Pearson does not set a minimum educational qualification. You do not need a school certificate, a degree or a previous English course to book the test. A recent secondary school student, a graduate and an experienced professional follow the same booking process.
Qualifications do matter in one place: the application you make after the test. The institution or authority receiving your result may set its own entry rules. A university may ask for a particular degree or prior grades, and a visa may have its own skill or occupation requirements. These rules are separate from PTE eligibility, so check them early.
PTE ID Requirements for Test Day
Documents that prove one’s identity need careful attention, because a mismatch can stop you from taking the test. You must bring a valid, original ID to the test centre. Pearson’s booking and ID guidance lists the accepted documents, and a passport is the preferred form of ID in most countries. Make sure the ID is still valid on your test date.
Your name, date of birth, citizenship and gender must match the details in your booking. For example, a candidate who registers as Ali Khan while the passport reads Mohammad Ali Khan may be turned away.
Note: Pearson does not give a refund when a candidate is turned away because of an invalid ID.
Is There a Minimum English Level or Attempt Limit?
There is no minimum English level required to sit the test. A candidate with a lower level can still book, although the result may not meet the requirement of a university or visa authority.
There is also no limit on the number of times you can take PTE Academic. If your score is lower than you need, you can book again after more preparation.
Candidates can use the time between attempts to work on one weak skill, such as speaking or writing, rather than repeating all of their preparation. Check the current rescheduling and fee rules on the Pearson website before you book again.
How to Book the PTE Academic Test
Bookings are made through the official PTE website or through an authorised agent that uses official Pearson systems.
Create a Pearson account, choose a test centre and date, answer the booking questions and pay the fee. Pearson warns test takers to be careful with anyone who offers much lower prices, guaranteed scores or score reports without a test.
If you need special test arrangements, such as 25% extra time, a 10-minute break or a separate room, you must support the request with valid medical evidence. Pearson asks you to submit the request at least six weeks before your test, and its accommodations page explains the evidence it needs.
PTE Eligibility vs Score Requirements
Being eligible to take the test and reaching a required score are two different matters. Anyone who meets the age and ID rules can sit for the PTE Academic. The score you need depends on which university you aim for.
Universities set their own minimum overall scores, and some courses also set minimums for individual skills. For example, a nursing course may ask for different scores from a business course at the same university. Check each course page before choosing a target.
Skilled migration to Australia uses Competent, Proficient and Superior English levels, and the Department of Home Affairs changed its approved English test requirements on 7 August 2025. Older score tables on other websites may therefore be out of date, so check the Home Affairs English language page before setting a target. Home Affairs also does not accept tests delivered completely online, so book a test centre session for visa use. Our guide to the PTE requirement for the 186 visa covers one common pathway.
PTE Eligibility Checklist Before You Book
Use this list to confirm that you are ready to book:
- You are at least 16 years old
- A parent or guardian is ready to confirm consent if you are under 18
- Your ID is valid, original and accepted in your country
- Your booking details match your ID exactly
- You know the score your university or visa requires
- Your test date leaves enough time before your application deadline
- You have booked through the official website or an authorised agent
Concluding Words
Eligibility is only the first step. The test itself takes careful preparation, and your target score will shape how long you need. Start by finding the exact score your university, employer or visa authority asks for, then compare it with your current English level. A short practice test can show which skills need the most work, whether that is speaking, writing, reading or listening. Once you know the gap, choose a test date that leaves enough time to close it and still meet your application deadline
