Preparing for the PTE Academic exam involves more than practising speaking, writing, reading and listening. You also need to understand the rules that apply at the test centre. Following them can help you avoid issues on test day.
This guide explains the key PTE exam rules you should know before test day.
Bring the Right Identification
Your identification is one of the most important PTE requirements. For PTE Academic, you should bring a valid passport. If you take the test outside your country of citizenship, Pearson states that a valid passport is the only acceptable form of ID.
Your physical ID must be the same document you selected when booking your test. Digital IDs, photocopies and temporary versions are not accepted. The document must also be valid and issued no more than 10 years ago.
The name, date of birth, citizenship and gender in your booking must exactly match your ID. Your photograph should also match your current appearance. If you cannot provide the required ID, the test centre will not allow you to take the test and you may lose your test fee.

Arrive at the Test Centre on Time
You should arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled test. If you arrive late, Pearson may not allow you to take the test and you may lose the test fee.
During check-in, the Test Administrator will verify your identity. The centre may also take your photograph, digital signature and palm vein scan. These checks help maintain the security of the test environment.
Follow the Rules About Personal Belongings
PTE test centres provide secure storage for personal belongings. You must place your personal items in the designated storage area before entering the test room. You cannot access them until you complete the test.
You should not take phones, electronic devices, digital watches, wallets or purses into the test room. Hats, coats, books and notes are also not allowed. Jewellery thicker than ¼ inch or ½ cm is prohibited.
You also cannot eat, drink, chew gum or smoke inside the test room. Chatting or disturbing other test takers is not permitted.
Turn off your phone and other electronic devices before storing them. Pearson also states that the test centre is not responsible for lost, stolen or misplaced belongings, so avoid bringing unnecessary valuables.

Use Only the Materials Provided
The test centre provides an erasable whiteboard and two pens for making notes. You must keep these materials inside the test room and return them after you finish.
Do not write anything on the whiteboard before the test begins. If you use all the available space, raise your hand and the Test Administrator will provide a new whiteboard.
Stay in Your Seat and Follow Test Instructions
PTE Academic uses a secure and monitored testing environment. Your identity will be checked before you begin, and the test centre will monitor you during the test. Video and audio recording form part of the security process.
Follow the Test Administrator’s instructions. If you experience a technical problem, raise your hand and ask for help instead of trying to fix it yourself.
Avoid talking to other candidates or attempting to communicate with anyone during the test.

Understand What Counts as Malpractice
Pearson treats test security seriously. Malpractice can include receiving help during the test, allowing another person to take the test for you, bringing an unauthorised item into the test room, writing on the whiteboard before the test starts or attempting to collect and share test content.
You must not copy, remove or share test questions or answers from the test centre. You also cannot collaborate or communicate with other people during the test or an unauthorised break.
Breaking these rules can lead to cancellation or revocation of your PTE score. Pearson may also ban candidates who engage in malpractice or abusive behaviour from taking future tests and may take legal action.
Know the Cancellation and Rescheduling Rules
Your plans can change, so it is useful to understand the booking rules. Pearson currently allows you to reschedule a test for free when more than 14 full calendar days remain before your test. You can reschedule the same appointment a maximum of 6 times.
If 14 days or less remain, you cannot reschedule the appointment directly. You need to cancel the booking and make a new appointment, with the applicable cancellation rules and fees.
If you cancel more than 14 full calendar days before your test, you can receive a full refund. If you cancel between 14 and 7 full calendar days before the test, you receive a 50% refund. No refund is provided when 7 calendar days or less remain.
Pearson may also consider free rescheduling in certain medical or family emergencies when you provide appropriate evidence. These requests remain subject to Pearson’s discretion.

Final Checklist Before Your PTE Exam
Before leaving for the test centre, check that you have your valid passport, know your test time and location, and plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early. Leave unnecessary electronic devices, books, notes and valuables at home whenever possible.
