NAATI CCL Test Guidelines
The CCL tests consist of two dialogues. Each exam dialogue is a discussion between a speaker of your LOTE (Language Other Than English) and an English speaker. Once you hear the chime, you must activate each tape and begin your interpretation. The monologues in the tests consist of two segments- LOTE and English.
The conversations in the CCL tests occur in various settings and situations that candidates might face.
To successfully pass the NAATI CCL test, candidates must be able to:
- Participate in situations where relatively straightforward information gets exchanged without much deviance from accepted pronunciation, expression, style, and register norms.
- Give meaning to the speakers' words and exhibit precise comprehension and production in English and the LOTE.
The NAATI CCL tests are conducted online from Monday to Friday.
The test consists of two recordings of dialogue, where each dialogue is a conversation between a native speaker of any Language Other Than English (LOTE). Each of the two discussions is approx. 300 words, broken up into sections of about 35 words each, half of which is in English and the other half in the LOTE.
Since the NAATI CCL test is conducted online, you can attempt it from anywhere in the world. Candidates must take note that all tests run according to the Canberra time.
You can find further details about the NAATI CCL test format and other relevant information on their official website - https://www.naati.com.au/services/ccl/.
The dialogues used for the test are based on real-life events you will encounter in your day-to-day life in Australia and reflect Australian culture. They are specially curated and designed to test your comprehension and communication skills in both languages.
The topics covered in the test may include:
- Business
- Community
- Consumer Affairs
- Education
- Employment
- Finances
- Health
- Housing
- Immigration/Settlement
- Insurance
- Legal
- Social Services
As a candidate, your efficiency in English and LOTE communication will get assessed by a minimum of two examiners.
You must note that any error will result in a loss of points. Additionally, the examiners will consider your mistakes while performing and how they affect your overall communication.
The two key factors that will affect your scores in this assessment are:
- Language Quality: Your competency and proficiency in English and LOTE.
- Language Register: The degree of formality with which a candidate conveys the meaning.
